A pilot was able to extricate himself from the wreckage of the light plane he was flying Thursday after it crashed on a city street in eastern San Diego County.

The Cessna 195's single engine went down shortly after 10:30 am. between the two bridges that separate the eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 8 over Greenfield Drive in El Cajon, Heartland Fire & Rescue spokesman Andy McKellar said.

When it hit the road, the plane grazed the SUV, causing minor damage, McKellar said. The plane ended up "pretty hard," though, with its nose tilted to such an extent that the wind was actually pointing backwards, he said.
The 65-year-old pilot, who lives in San Diego and was the sole occupant of the Cessna, was conscious and alert after the crash. Paramedics took him to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego for treatment of serious but apparently non-life-threatening injuries, CHP Public Affairs Officer Travis Garrow said.
The cause of the crash, which forced the closure of the 1700 block of Greenfield Drive, is still unclear.
"We know that (the pilot) was in contact with Gillespie Field (port) before the accident," McKellar said.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will try to determine the cause of the crash, according to a statement from the FAA.
